Bone Mineral Density

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scanning, also referred to as DEXA or DXA, is a diagnostic tool that uses dual-energy X-Ray absorptiometry to measure bone density. This non-invasive procedure is essential for assessing bone strength, identifying osteoporosis, and determining fracture risk. It provides critical insights for both patients and healthcare providers, supporting early detection and effective management of bone health conditions.

FAQs

Yes, appointments are required for BMD scans. To schedule, please contact BR Radiology Group by phone, in person, or via referral submission. Our staff will confirm the earliest available time for your scan.
Minimal preparation is needed. At the time of booking, you will receive specific instructions tailored to your scan. Comfortable, two-piece clothing without metal fastenings is recommended. You may be asked to change into an examination gown. Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete any required paperwork.

Ensure you bring the following:

  • Your referral form from your healthcare provider.
  • Your Medicare or DVA card (if applicable).
  • Information about prior BMD scans and any relevant medication history.
Upon arrival, a radiographer will guide you to the examination room and explain the procedure. During the scan, you will lie still on a cushioned table while the scanner measures bone density in areas like your spine, hip, or forearm. The scan is quick and painless. Afterward, the results will be reviewed by a radiologist and forwarded to your referring doctor.
BR Radiology Group bulk bill most Medicare-eligible BMD scans. If there are additional costs, our booking team will inform you ahead of your appointment.
Reports are typically ready within 24 to 48 hours. If your doctor requires the results urgently, please notify us at the time of your appointment. We prioritise urgent cases to ensure timely delivery of results.
