Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses powerful magnetic fields and advanced computer technology to create detailed images of the body’s internal structures. Unlike X-Rays, MRI does not use radiation, making it a safe and non-invasive imaging method. The procedure is painless and widely used to diagnose a variety of conditions.

FAQs

  • You may continue your regular diet unless instructed otherwise.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid wearing jewellery, watches, or other metal items, as these must be removed before the scan.
  • To prevent interference with the imaging process, refrain from using makeup, hairspray, or other hair products on the day of your appointment.
  • It is best to leave valuables at home.
You will lie on a motorized table that slides into the MRI scanner, which is shaped like a tunnel. During the scan, you will hear loud knocking or buzzing noises as the machine captures images. It is important to remain completely still to ensure clear results. If needed, a contrast agent may be injected to enhance image clarity. Patients with certain implants or medical devices, such as pacemakers, neurostimulators, cochlear implants, or metal clips in the eyes, cannot undergo MRI scans. If you have worked with welders or grinders, an X-Ray of your eyes may be required to ensure no metal fragments are present.
If you are concerned about feelings of claustrophobia, please contact our team before your appointment. We can discuss strategies to help you feel more comfortable, such as the use of an open MRI or relaxation techniques.
No, MRI scans are painless. You may feel slight discomfort if lying still for an extended period, but there are no physical sensations caused by the scan itself.

Most MRI scans take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the complexity of the imaging required.

Please allow 24 to 48 hours for your report. If you have been instructed to return to your healthcare professional immediately following the scan, it is important to advise one of our staff members. If your exam is clinically urgent, this will be prioritised, and our team will communicate with our Radiologist to ensure a prompt report is provided.

If a contrast injection is needed, the radiologist or technician will administer it during the scan. They will explain the process and address any questions beforehand.
